Pipe wrenches serve the task of turning and loosening metal pipes, round nuts and flanges. Applications include industrial pipeline installation and construction. They are also used in maintaining mechanical-electrical systems. The serrated jaw creates a firm clamping force on round surfaces, helping transmit torque effectively without slipping. This group covers several different structural styles. There are cast iron handles, cast aluminium handles and forged steel handles. There are also straight jaws, angled jaws and S-shaped jaws. And there are chain wrap systems too.

Each design suits its own working conditions, from tight spaces to continuous high-intensity work. Jaw opening ranges from a few tens of millimetres to more than one hundred millimetres. This corresponds to pipe diameters from small to large. Overall length runs from 200 mm to 900 mm, allowing leverage to be matched to the force required.

Manufacturing materials are mainly high-pressure forged steel, alloy ductile iron or aluminium alloy. All undergo a high-frequency hardening process. This achieves the intended hardness and durability. The following lines comply with the international standard DIN ISO 5234, ensuring compatibility and safety:

  • MCC Japan
  • ELORA Germany
  • REMS Germany

Classification by handle material

The handle material determines the weight, bending strength and impact resistance of the tool. Cast iron handles appear in models such as PW-SD35, PW-SD90 and PW-SD20, providing rigidity and a reasonable price for general applications. Cast aluminium handles are found in PW-AL30, PW-AL60 and PWDAL30, cutting weight considerably compared with cast iron and making prolonged work less tiring. The aluminium handle cross-section is usually an I-beam profile, increasing bending resistance while keeping mass low. Hot-forged steel handles made under high pressure appear in the heavy duty line such as PW-AD35, PW-AD90 and PW-AD20, withstanding continuous working intensity and high torque.

The clamping jaws and serrations are all made from high-pressure forged steel. They are high-frequency hardened to achieve high surface hardness. The sharp serrations bite firmly into the metal pipe, preventing slippage when force is transmitted. Some models used on soft workpieces or easily scratched surfaces have finer teeth, for example PWPDAL with thick teeth and a movable upper jaw, reducing marks on plated or stainless steel pipe surfaces. The jaw opening adjustment mechanism is usually a screw thread or a knurled knob. This mechanism allows the distance between the two jaws to be changed quickly. The design adapts to many pipe diameters without needing to change the tool.

Classification by jaw structure

A straight jaw parallel to the handle axis is the most common type, suited to roomy working spaces. The models PW-SD, PW-AL and PW-AD all belong to this group, with jaw openings from 28 mm to 102 mm depending on size. Jaws angled at 45 degrees or 90 degrees appear in 67E, 66A and the CW line, helping reach pipes close to walls or in tight corners. The models CWALAD25, CW-250, CWALAD30 and CW-300 have lengths from 250 mm to 300 mm, jaw openings from 13 mm to 44 mm, with a compact jaw head that does not protrude beyond the pipe profile.

S-shaped jaws curve across three different clamping positions. They allow turning of nuts, pipes and round metal bars. The models 68SN and 116X01 R illustrate this design, with jaw openings up to 1" or S 1 1/2". An ultra-thin jaw appears in PWTDA, used when tightening thin nuts or several stacked layers of nuts in restricted space. A quick-clamping jaw with a knurled knob is found in 136, allowing fast adjustment without turning many thread revolutions. A plastic-covered jaw that prevents surface scratching appears in 138-A, protecting the plating or paint on pipes during turning and loosening.

Classification by force transmission mechanism

The direct serration mechanism accounts for the majority, in which clamping force increases with the turning direction thanks to the tooth angle. When the handle is turned, the movable jaw slides along the axis and the teeth bite deeper into the pipe, creating high friction. The chain wrap mechanism appears in FW and MT-00, using a metal chain wrapped around the pipe or flange, then pulled tight by a ratchet or lever mechanism. The model FW-0110 clamps pipes from Ø73 mm to Ø265 mm, with a total length of 961 mm, suited to large pipes and flanges. The model FW-50 is smaller, clamping from Ø73 mm to Ø126 mm, 533 mm long.

MT-type chain wrenches use a longer chain, allowing several wraps around large-diameter pipes. The model MT-0010 is 300 mm long, clamping pipes Ø14-89 mm, equivalent to an inch-system OD pipe size of about Ø3.1/2". The model MT-0020 is 510 mm long, clamping pipes Ø27-165 mm, equivalent to an inch-system OD pipe size of about Ø6.1/2". The handle is hot-forged steel with electrostatic powder coating against rust. The metal chain withstands high tensile force and does not stretch after repeated use. The ratchet or lever mechanism increases clamping force without requiring excessive human effort.

Classification by working intensity

The general-purpose line includes PW-SD and PW-AL, serving everyday installation and maintenance tasks in homes, small workshops and on site. Cast iron or cast aluminium handles, standard serrations, reasonable price. The heavy duty line includes PW-AD and PWDAL30, used for continuous high intensity in factories and large plants. Forged steel or thicker cast aluminium handles, deeper serrations, withstanding high torque. The model PW-DA600 is 600 mm long with an 89 mm jaw opening, belonging to the heavy duty aluminium-handle line, combining light weight with high load capacity.

The ultra-thin line such as PWTDA is used in restricted spaces, with a jaw head thinner than conventional models, helping reach thin nuts or several stacked layers of nuts. The toothless line such as TWMA-260 has rollers instead of serrations, reducing scratching on plated or stainless steel pipe surfaces, handling torque up to 100 Nm, with a jaw opening from 0 to 70 mm. The quick-clamping line such as 136 has a knurled knob for fast jaw opening adjustment without turning many thread revolutions, saving time when pipe sizes change frequently.

Technical standards and origin

Many models meet DIN ISO 5234. This is an international standard specifying dimensions and tolerances. The standard also sets mechanical requirements for pipe wrenches. The models 136, 66A and 67E from ELORA Germany comply with this standard, ensuring compatibility with industrial pipe systems. The model 75 meets US-Norm GGG-W-651, class A, Type 1, to the American standard, with jaw openings from 35 mm to 77 mm. The material ELORA-Chrome-Vanadium 31 CrV3 / 1.2208 has high hardness and good wear resistance. MCC Japan items such as PW-SD35, PW-AL60 and PW-AD90 are made 100% in Japan, going through high-pressure hot forging and high-frequency hardening.

Technical specifications are usually embossed on the handle. These include the inch size, maximum jaw opening and model code. For example PW-SD20 is marked 8 inch, jaw opening 28 mm, length 200 mm. The model PW-SD90 is marked 36 inch, jaw opening 102 mm, length 900 mm. The inch size is commonly used for classification. But the actual jaw opening is measured in millimetres. That figure reflects pipe clamping capacity accurately. Weight increases with length and handle material. A cast iron handle model is heavier than an aluminium one of the same size. A forged steel handle model is the heaviest but the most durable.

Applications in pipeline installation

Installing water, compressed air and steam lines in factories and buildings commonly uses straight-jaw models such as PW-SD35 or PW-AL30. The serrations grip black steel SGP pipe, galvanised pipe or stainless steel pipe firmly, helping turn threaded joints without slipping. Installing pipes in tight corners, close to walls or under floors uses angled-jaw models such as CWALAD25, CW-300 or CWALAD35. The angled jaw head helps reach horizontal pipes running along the base of a wall without collision. Installing large flanges or large-diameter pipes uses chain wrenches such as FW-0110 or MT-0020, with the chain wrapped around the pipe and pulled tight by the ratchet mechanism.

Maintaining underground irrigation water lines and building water supply and drainage systems uses light aluminium-handle models such as PW-AL60 or PWDAL30, reducing fatigue during prolonged work. Repairing sink drain pipes and siphon traps uses siphon wrench pliers such as 138 or 138-A, with jaw openings from 60 mm to 70 mm and plastic jaws that prevent scratching of chrome-plated surfaces. Removing and fitting flexible pipes, plated pipes or stainless steel pipes uses fine-toothed models such as PWPDAL, reducing marks on the surface.

Notes on selection and use

Choose a size matching the pipe diameter you work with regularly. Small models such as PW-SD20 or PW-AD20 are 200 mm long with a 28 mm jaw opening, suited to small pipes under 1 inch. Medium models such as PW-SD35 or PW-AL60 are 350-600 mm long with jaw openings of 49-77 mm, suited to pipes from 1 to 2.5 inch. Large models such as PW-SD90 or PW-AD90 are 900 mm long with a 102 mm jaw opening, suited to pipes of 3 inch and above. Choose the handle material according to frequency of use. Cast iron handles suit general applications. Aluminium handles suit prolonged work. Forged steel handles suit continuous high intensity.

Adjust the jaw opening close to the pipe diameter before clamping, avoiding an overly wide opening that reduces clamping force. Turn the handle in the required direction; clamping force increases automatically thanks to the tooth angle. Do not use an extension lever to increase force, as this can break the handle or teeth. After use, wipe dirt and grease off the jaws and store in a dry place.

Inspect the serrations periodically and replace them when teeth are worn or broken. Do not use a pipe wrench for striking or as a pry bar; use it only for turning and loosening pipes and round nuts. Angled-jaw models require a check of the joint between jaw and handle for firmness, avoiding looseness that causes slipping during turning.
