Cut 41 defines the V-shaped sweep of this Kirschen curved gouge, opened to roughly 60 degrees. The blade is hand-forged in Germany and fitted to an octagonal hornbeam handle that resists rolling. Series 3142 covers eleven blade widths for grooving, lettering and relief work. Blades are also supplied without a handle on request. Weights and dimensions may vary slightly.
A carving chisel with a cut 41 profile cuts a V-shaped channel rather than a round flute. Kirschen Series 3142 builds that profile into a curved gouge, with the two cutting wings meeting at roughly 60 degrees. The blade follows a long bend along its length, so the cutting edge can reach into hollows that a straight blade cannot enter.

Every blade in the series is hand-forged in Germany. Because of hand-forging, the sweep is indicative and not a binding figure. The blade is fitted to an octagonal hornbeam handle, which gives the fingers flat bearing surfaces when the cutting angle is adjusted. Series 3142 is listed in eleven blade widths, from the smallest detail sizes up to the widest. Stated sizes and weights may vary slightly. Single blades without a handle are also available on request.
Cut 41 describes a V-parting shape with an included angle of about 60 degrees. The curved form of Series 3142 lifts the handle away from the workpiece. That clearance lets the carver drive deep V-grooves and sweeping lines inside concave surfaces. The same geometry is used for lettering, veining and outlining relief work before the waste wood is removed.
The companion series on the same catalogue page share the cut 41 angle but differ in blade form. Series 3141 is the straight gouge, and Series 3144 is the flat spoon bent gouge. Carvers often combine the three forms so that one profile can be followed across flat panels, hollows and tight recesses without changing the character of the cut.
The handle is turned from hornbeam and shaped with eight flats. The flats stop the chisel rolling off a sloped bench and give a repeatable grip orientation. Hornbeam is a dense, close-grained hardwood, which suits handles that take mallet taps and sustained hand pressure. Handle and blade are matched so the balance point sits close to the hand.
Handle format also affects control of the cut depth. With an octagonal section, the thumb and index finger register against a flat rather than a round surface. Carvers who work long sessions use that contact to hold a constant bevel angle. The handle can be tapped by hand or with a wooden carving mallet when harder species are being worked.
Series 3142 is used in figure carving, ornament and architectural woodwork. Typical tasks include cutting V-grooves, veining leaf and scroll patterns, and outlining raised relief. The curved blade reaches into bowls, shells and other concave shapes where a straight gouge bottoms out. Narrow widths handle fine line work and signature detail. Wider widths cut longer, continuous grooves in panels, door frames and furniture components.
The 2026 Kirschen catalogue lists carving chisels with cut 41 on one page, in three forms. Series 3141 covers the straight gouge, Series 3142 the curved gouge, and Series 3144 the flat spoon bent gouge. Each entry gives the order number, blade width in millimetres, outside dimensions and weight in grams. A footnote states that dimensions and weights may vary slightly, that single blades are available, and that cuts are not binding due to hand-forging.
