Turned from hornbeam into a bell shape, the Klopfholz head absorbs impact without bruising timber. The ash handle follows the grip contour and passes through the head, locked by a hard wedge pin. Five head diameters cover light joint tapping up to heavier assembly work. All-wood construction keeps strike noise low on finished surfaces.

Description

The wooden carpenter mallet Kirschen 3500, known in German workshops as a Klopfholz, is built entirely from wood. The striking body is turned round on a lathe into a bell or pear profile from hornbeam, a species that takes repeated impact well. The handle is turned in ash to follow the shape of a closed hand. Ash keeps a degree of flex and carries high bending moments during longer strokes.

The handle runs right through the head and is secured with a hard wedge pin. That joint resists the head working loose or flying off in use. Because head and handle are both wood, a blow lands softer than with a metal hammer. Sound level stays moderate and the struck surface is far less likely to dent. The family covers five head diameters, so a joiner can match mallet mass to the task.

Wooden carpenter mallet Kirschen 3500: construction and materials

Head and handle

The head is lathe-turned into a symmetrical bell form, giving two usable striking faces. Hornbeam is dense and close-grained, which suits repeated contact with chisel handles and timber. The ash handle is shaped to the palm and wedged through the head from the top. Wood used for both parts receives technical treatment that limits water absorption and insect attack.

  • Bell-shaped, lathe-turned head in hornbeam
  • Contoured handle in ash with flexural strength
  • Handle fitted through the full head depth
  • Hard wedge pin against head loosening
  • All-wood build for reduced strike noise
  • Wood treated against moisture ingress and insects

Two symmetrical faces let the user rotate the head as one side wears. The through-handle transfers the stroke along the axis of the tool rather than into the joint alone. For joiners working on visible surfaces, the wooden face is the main reason to reach for this mallet instead of a steel head.

Sizes in the 3500 family

Five models are offered, differing in head diameter, weight and total length. Lighter heads suit fine adjustment and small joints. Heavier heads deliver more energy per blow for driving larger tenons home or seating wide boards. Figures below come from laboratory measurement under standard climatic conditions, with tolerances typical for timber under changing humidity and temperature.

  • 3500080: head 80 mm, 330 g, length 220 mm
  • 3500090: head 90 mm, 385 g, length 225 mm
  • 3500100: head 100 mm, 530 g, length 230 mm
  • 3500110: head 110 mm, 695 g, length 250 mm
  • 3500120: head 120 mm, 990 g, length 265 mm

Weight climbs from 330 g to 990 g across the range, roughly a threefold spread. Length also grows with head size, which lengthens the swing arc. Workshops that handle both cabinet work and heavier framing often keep two sizes on the bench. Selection depends on joint size, timber species and how much control the operation needs.

Common applications

The Klopfholz is used to tap flat timber surfaces while work is in progress. Light blows close joints, seat dowels and correct the position of parts without marking the face. Cabinetmakers use it to assemble and disassemble dry-fitted frames. It also drives wooden and plastic chisel handles during carving and mortising. Further uses include nudging panels into grooves, aligning mitres before clamping and bedding veneer blocks. The wooden face keeps prepared and finished surfaces intact.

Catalog technical notes

Kirschen states that the timber used for these mallets is technically treated to minimise water uptake and insect damage. All weight and length values in the model table were measured in a laboratory under standard weather conditions. Mass and length tolerances remain within the range normal for wood exposed to varying ambient humidity and temperature, so small deviations between individual pieces are expected.
