Cut 10 sweep gives this gouge a deep hollow blade for scooping grooves and shaping curved surfaces in wood. The blade is hand-forged from high-carbon steel and hardened to about 61 HRc along its full length. An octagonal white oak handle keeps the grip steady during mallet work or fine paring. Made in Germany.
The wood carving gouge chisel Kirschen 3110 carries a deeply hollowed blade marked Cut 10. That sweep number describes how strongly the cutting edge curves across its width. A higher number means a deeper hollow. Cut 10 sits in the deep range used for general carving, statues and raised ornament.
The blade is hand-forged from high-carbon steel and hardened to roughly 61 HRc over its full length. It holds an edge through long carving sessions and can be re-honed many times. The octagonal white oak handle resists rolling on the bench and gives a firm grip for mallet blows or controlled paring cuts. Blade faces are polished smooth, so cuts leave the wood surface free of scratches. The chisel works on softwood and hardwood alike. Blade widths run 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 25, 30, 35 and 40 mm.
A deep sweep removes more fibre per pass than a flat gouge. Carvers use it to rough out volumes, hollow bowls and cut wavy surfaces before switching to shallower tools. The curve also clears large concave areas quickly, which saves time during shaping. Control stays predictable because the handle shape resists twisting in the hand.
Forging by hand gives the blade its tapered section and the even hollow of the Cut 10 profile. Hardness is kept uniform along the whole blade, not only at the tip. That matters once the edge has been sharpened back several millimetres over years of use. The polished surface reduces friction inside deep cuts and keeps the walls of a groove clean.
Re-sharpening follows normal gouge practice: shape the outside bevel first, then remove the inner burr with a slip stone. Natural Arkansas stones are a common choice for this step. Keeping the inner curve true preserves the Cut 10 geometry and the clean release of shavings.
White oak is dense and takes repeated mallet impact without splitting at the shoulder. The octagonal cross-section stops the tool rolling off a sloped bench and gives clear reference for blade orientation. Carvers who work by hand pressure can index the flats with the thumb and keep the sweep aligned through a long cut.
Narrow widths suit folds, hair and small transitions. Wide blades take out volume fast when a block is first opened up. Many carvers keep two or three widths of the same sweep so the curve stays consistent across a piece.
Typical work includes hollowing bowls and recesses, roughing the first masses of a figure and cutting deep flowing grooves. Sculptors use the Cut 10 sweep for drapery folds, hair, and smooth transitions between volumes on statues and relief panels. It also cleans large concave surfaces before finishing passes with flatter gouges. Traditional wood sculpture, religious figures, relief carving and large decorative patterns are the usual fields of use.
Store the chisel dry and apply a light oil film if it will stay unused for a long period. Do not cut metal or plastic with it, as both damage the edge. Keep the blade in a tool roll or rack so the cutting edge does not touch other steel tools.
