Straight V-blades ground to roughly 100 degrees cut crisp lines and grooves in wood. Series 3145 covers fourteen blade widths, from fine detail work up to broad channels. Each blade is ground and sharpened by hand. The octagonal hornbeam handle resists rolling on the bench and helps hold a steady cutting angle during carving.
A professional wood carving chisel with a straight V-blade, Kirschen series 3145 cuts the sharp lines that shape lettering, borders and relief work. The blade is ground to an included angle of about 100 degrees, listed in the catalogue as cut 45. Each piece is ground and sharpened by hand, so the edge arrives ready for fine work.

The series runs across fourteen blade widths, from 2 mm up to 30 mm. Total length grows with the blade, from 230 mm on the smallest sizes to 275 mm on the 30 mm model. Weights range from 59 g to 254 g. The octagonal hornbeam handle keeps the tool from rolling off the bench. Its flats also give the hand a fixed reference, which helps repeat the same cutting angle cut after cut. Carvers who prefer a curved sweep can use the matching series 3146.
The V-profile is straight along its length, so groove depth stays even as the tool advances. An opening of roughly 100 degrees produces a wide, legible line rather than a narrow slit. Hand grinding sets the bevels on both wings of the V, and the point where they meet is sharpened by hand as well. That matters, because a dull V-point tears fibres instead of slicing them.
Narrow widths of 2 to 6 mm suit hair lines, veining and small ornament. Mid sizes around 8 to 16 mm handle lettering and decorative borders. The 20 to 30 mm chisels open broad channels and rough out form before finer tools take over. Mixing two or three widths in one piece keeps the line weight varied and the surface lively.
The handle is turned from hornbeam and shaped with eight flats. Octagonal stock stops the chisel rolling on a sloped bench and sits predictably in the palm. Handle sections step up with blade width, from 20 x 20 mm on the small sizes to 30 x 30 mm on the 25 mm and 30 mm models. The added mass supports mallet-driven cuts without upsetting balance.
V-chisels cut the outline before any waste is removed. Carvers use them to set in lettering, to run decorative borders and to separate motifs from the ground. In relief work, the V-groove marks the boundary that gouges then clear. The tool also cuts veining in foliage, feather detail and hair texture on figures. It works in softwood and hardwood alike, free hand or along a drawn pattern. Pattern makers and furniture restorers use the same cuts for repairs.
Kirschen lists a curved version under series 3146, also ground to roughly 100 degrees. It covers eleven sizes from 2 mm to 20 mm, with weights from 58 g to 188 g. The curve lets the point follow hollowed or domed surfaces, where a straight blade would bottom out. Many carvers keep both forms and switch according to the surface in front of them.
Handle the edge as you would any carving tool. Store the chisel in a roll or rack. Keep the V-point off bare metal. Refresh the bevels on a fine stone. Do this before the cut starts to crush fibres.
