Curved gouge blades ground to cut 5 give the Kirschen Serie 3114 chisels their rolling, mid-depth sweep. Each blade carries a 20 degree bevel and seats in an octagonal hornbeam handle that resists rolling on the bench. Widths run from 2 mm to 40 mm, with total lengths of 230 mm to 280 mm. Hand-forged in Germany.

Description

Wood carving chisel models in the Kirschen Serie 3114 use a curved gouge blade ground to cut 5. That sweep sits between a flat gouge and a deep hollow blade. It removes waste quickly and still leaves a controlled, flowing surface. The blade is hand-forged and ground to a 20 degree bevel. Each blade is fitted into an octagonal hornbeam handle.

The series covers blade widths from 2 mm up to 40 mm. Tool length grows with the blade, from 230 mm on the narrow sizes to 280 mm on the widest. Shank section follows the same logic, stepping from 20 x 20 mm to 30 x 30 mm. Weights run from 62 g to 249 g. The octagonal handle gives a clear reference for blade angle and stops the chisel rolling off the bench.

Blade geometry and grinding

Cut 5 describes a moderate curvature. Carvers use it for both roughing out and finishing passes, because the arc clears material without digging in sharply. The 20 degree bevel balances edge keenness against edge support, so resharpening intervals stay reasonable in hardwood. Blades are hand-forged, which is why the catalogue notes that cut profiles are not strictly binding.

  • Blade form: curved gouge, cut 5 (Stich 5)
  • Bevel angle: 20 degrees
  • Sweep character: between a flat gouge and a deep hollow blade
  • Hand-forged blade, hollow-ground cutting edge
  • Suitable for roughing and for finishing cuts
  • Blades also offered without a handle

Narrow blades of 2 mm to 8 mm suit detail work and tight concave areas. Mid sizes from 10 mm to 20 mm handle general modelling. Wide blades of 22 mm to 40 mm clear volume on larger sculptures. Choosing width by the radius of the cut keeps the edge fully engaged and reduces tear-out along the grain.

Octagonal hornbeam handle

Hornbeam is a dense, close-grained hardwood. The eight flats give a positive grip for push cuts and let the carver feel the blade orientation without looking. A ferrule secures the tang. The handle withstands light blows from a wooden carving mallet, which is the usual way to drive wider gouges through dense timber.

  • Handle material: hornbeam
  • Handle shape: octagonal
  • Ferruled joint between handle and tang
  • Flats prevent the chisel rolling on the bench
  • Accepts light mallet work with a wooden mallet

Handle proportions scale with blade width, so wide gouges feel balanced rather than nose-heavy. The flats also help when the tool is held low for shallow slicing cuts. For continuous carving sessions, the octagonal section spreads hand pressure more evenly than a round grip of the same diameter.

Common applications

Serie 3114 gouges are used in artistic wood sculpture and relief carving. The curved edge cuts concave channels, rounds forms and clears waste from hollows. Narrow widths define folds, hair and drapery detail. Wider widths shape bowls, torsos and background surfaces. The series works on both softwood and hardwood, driven by hand or by a wooden mallet. Pattern makers, restorers and furniture carvers use the same profiles for curved mouldings and ornament.

Catalogue reference

Page 57 of the Kirschen 2026 catalogue lists Serie 3114 as the curved gouge in cut 5, with an octagonal hornbeam handle. The table gives blade width, total dimensions and weight for each size. The same page shows Serie 3105 flat gouge, Serie 3126 spoon bent gouge and Serie 3135 flat back bent gouge. A footnote states that dimensions and weights may vary slightly, that single blades are also available, and that cuts are not binding because the blades are hand-forged.
