Hand-forged in Germany with a V-profile ground to roughly 75 degrees, the Kirschen 3139 straight V-chisel cuts crisp grooves in softwood and hardwood. The octagonal hornbeam handle resists rolling on the bench and stays firm under mallet blows. Fourteen blade widths run from 2 to 30 mm, with total lengths of 230 to 275 mm. Blades are also sold unhandled.
The carving chisel of Kirschen series 3139 cuts V-shaped grooves, outlines and decorative detail in wood. Catalog designation is cut 39, straight V-chisel, with a V angle of approximately 75 degrees. The narrow double-bevel profile removes a clean triangular chip in one pass. Each blade is hand-forged, so the groove shape may differ slightly from tool to tool.
The handle is octagonal hornbeam, a shape that keeps the tool from rolling and gives a firm grip. The series covers 14 blade widths: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 25 and 30 mm. Total length grows with blade width, from 230 mm up to 275 mm. Weights run from 58 g on the 2 mm blade to 239 g on the 30 mm blade. Kirschen also supplies single blades without a handle.
Cut 39 is the V-profile family in the Kirschen carving range. Series 3139 is the straight version, worked with hand pressure or a carving mallet. The catalog notes that dimensions and weights may vary slightly, and that cuts are not binding because of hand-forging.
Two flat flanks meet at a point to form the V. The included angle of about 75 degrees sets the width and depth ratio of the groove. A narrow blade suits lettering and fine lines, while wider blades clear decorative channels faster. Because forging is manual, the apex geometry can show small deviations between individual tools.
Keep the two flanks and the apex equally honed so the chisel tracks straight. A slipstone or small Arkansas stone reaches into the inner corner. Light, frequent honing keeps the point crisp and reduces tear-out on end grain and figured timber.
The octagonal hornbeam handle is seated on the tang with a metal ferrule. The eight flats give tactile feedback on blade orientation during cutting. Longer bodies on the wider sizes add leverage for deeper grooves. The same series is available as a bare blade for users who fit or replace handles themselves.
Store the chisels in a roll or rack so the apex does not contact metal. Kirschen lists a 12-pocket suede tool roll for carving and sculpting chisels, which keeps each blade separated. Wipe the steel after use and re-oil the handle occasionally to limit moisture movement.
Series 3139 is used for V-grooves, borders and ornamental detail on softwood and hardwood. Narrow blades from 2 to 6 mm handle lettering, hair lines and fine texture. Mid sizes from 8 to 16 mm cut decorative channels and geometric patterns. The 18 to 30 mm blades open wide grooves and relief outlines on larger panels, furniture parts, signboards and architectural carving.
Page 64 of the Kirschen 2026 catalog lists cut 39 with an octagonal hornbeam handle in three forms, all at roughly 75 degrees.
Size and weight figures may vary slightly, and single blades are also available.
